When Tiger chases a ball into the woods during a game of baseball, she fails to see Cropsy with his shears in his hands. Afterwards, Alfred gets in trouble for scaring the girls, which almost leads to him being kicked out of the camp. Glazer even threatens him, and he remains glum. The most infamous scene in the movie is when some of the campers are on the canoe, and they're killed off by Crospy. When Michelle swims in the deep water to find their bodies, she warns Todd. Afterwards, Glazer and Sally are attacked as they make out in the woods.

Cropsy hears the voices of the doctors saying the campers aren't to blame for his burns, as he sits in a wheelchair. Afterwards, he stalks the grim New York streets. He meets a woman and kills her with garden shears...then he heads back to another camp, and continues his rage against the campers.

The Burning (1981)****.

In 1981, Harvey and Bob Weinstein wrote and produced with Peter Lawrence, a low-budget horror movie "The Burning", the most controversial horror movie of the 1980's. After J. Lee Thompson's "Happy birthday to me", (1980), Canada, the first Miramax movie had a group of new comers: Fisher Stevens; Jason Alexander; and Holly Hunter in the cast. With the special effects by Tom Savini, it was dubbed a "Video Nasty" on the old VHS, after its cinema run in America, (and overseas).

The movie begins in 1976 at CAMP BLACKFOOT. When a group of teenagers led by Todd, (Brian Matthews), bang on the glass of sadistic caretaker Cropsy, (Lou David), who is asleep on his bunk, their pranking leads to a burning skull with candles in its 'eyes', to a massive fire. Crospy screams, and is lit up like a bon fire, as he flees through the front, cabin, door. In the end of the prologue, everyone is in deep shock...and the movie begins.

3Cropsy gets his revenge on a woman before he heads to camp...Tony Maylam's "The Burning", (1981). The movie was so shocking, (especially the beginning of the film), that it was a Video Nasty in the UK in the 1980's.

Madman (1982)***.

***
In 1980 through to 1981, another slasher movie called "Madman", (released in 1982), arrived after a delay after Tony Maylam's New York set movie "The Burning", (1981). Written and directed by Joe Giannone, and produced by Gary Sales, it is another summer camp slasher like the early "Friday the 13th" series...but with a difference.
***
The electronic music starts the movie, then the credits begin. A group of twenty-something campers surround themselves around a warm campfire, as a middle-aged counsellor named Max, (Carl Fredericks), tells the story of Madman Marz, (Paul Ehlers), who attacked his family with an axe. He tells them not to speak his name, as they shiver with dread.
***

At the camp, Richie, (Jimmy Steele), yells out Madman's name. Consequently, there's a shadow in the deep woods of the killer armed with an axe. The other people are: Betsy, (Gaylen Ross, George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", 1978), as "Alexis Dubin), who is dating TP, (Tony Fish); Stacy, (Harriet Bass); Dave, (Seth Jones); Ellie, (Jan Claire); Bill, (Alex Murphy). The rest of the cast are: Tommy, (Tom Veilleux); Jimmy, (Stephen Clark); Mary Ellen, (Vicki Kenneally); and Jeanie, (Lori Mathes).

***
As night falls, everyone falls victim to the Madman. Gaylen Ross struggles to fight the killer. She uses a shot gun, and attempts to contact Max in town. In short, she battles him in a house. "Madman", is the only horror movie, like "The Burning", (1981), not to have a sequel, prequel, or re-make. It stands alone as an underrated movie from the 1980's.

After several murders in the cave, TJ and Sarah face the miner who is killing everyone underground.

Making out in a mine isn't a good idea...George Mihalka's "My bloody valentine", (1981).
***
"My bloody valentine", suffered from the MPAA's cuts in America meaning the deaths are toned down. The acting, writers, and direction, are great. The film didn't have a sequel, nor prequel. But in 2009, there was an abysmal re-make in 3-D, that failed at the box office. The original 1981 horror movie is superior to "Halloween II", Rick Rosenthal, and "Friday the 13th Part II", Steve Miner, the same year in Hollywood. In short, the last act of "My Bloody Valentine", is suspenseful...and should be watched again.

Canadian horror movies were few and far between in the 1970's. "Cannibal Girls", Ivan Reitman, (1973); "Shivers", David Cronenberg, 1975; "Rabid", David Cronenberg, 1976; and "The Brood", David Cronenberg, 1979. Other directors like Bob Clark released "People shouldn't play with dead things", 1972; and "Black Christmas", 1974. By 1981, director George Mihalka made "My bloody valentine", an original horror movie that became a cult classic.

The Prowler (1981)****.

In 1981, producer and director Joseph Zito, "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter", (1984), made "Rosemary's killer", aka "The Prowler", three year's before. The movie written by Glenn Leopold and Neal Barbara, tells of a girl named Rosemary who tells her GI boyfriend by letter, (decades before E-mail was the norm), that she has another boyfriend, after the end of World War II ends in 1945, in the prologue. When Rosemary and her date are murdered, the film begins...and the horror starts.

Thirty-five years' later in 1980, Pam MacDonald, (Vickie Dawson), is preparing for party with her friends, as she's dating cop Mark London, (Christopher Goutman). Pam, Lisa, (Cindy Weintraub); Sherry, (Lisa Dunsheath); and Carl, (David Sederholm), are excited at the news of the party. As they set-up, a killer in GI clothes, and black boots on his feet, decides to get revenge after the events in the prologue.

The mystery of who is the prowler adds to the horror, as Pam and Mark investigate who is the killer at night time...Joseph Zito's "The Prowler", (1981).
***
After several murders at a party at Avalon Bay, Mark decides to solve the case while protecting his girlfriend. Pam is a strong girl who battles the killer in various places, especially in houses, etc. She is a cross between Laurie Strode, (Jamie Lee Curtis), John Carpenter's Halloween, 1978; and Ginny Field, (Amy Steel), from "Friday the 13th Part II, 1981, the same year. The special effects were done by Tom Savini, who worked on Tony Maylam's "The Burning", in 1981. In short, I won't tell you who the killer is, but "The Prowler" also stars Farley Granger and Lawrence Tierney in supporting roles, that strengthen the star power.
***

***
In all, "The Prowler", is an underrated horror movie from the 1980's. By 2018, thirty-seven years' later, it remains one of few horror movies not to get a sequel, prequel, or re-make, in that decade.
