In 1981, Harvey and Bob Weinstein wrote and produced with Peter Lawrence, a low-budget horror movie "The Burning", the most controversial horror movie of the 1980's. After J. Lee Thompson's "Happy birthday to me", (1980), Canada, the first Miramax movie had a group of new comers: Fisher Stevens; Jason Alexander; and Holly Hunter in the cast. With the special effects by Tom Savini, it was dubbed a "Video Nasty" on the old VHS, after its cinema run in America, (and overseas).

The movie begins in 1976 at CAMP BLACKFOOT. When a group of teenagers led by Todd, (Brian Matthews), bang on the glass of sadistic caretaker Cropsy, (Lou David), who is asleep on his bunk, their pranking leads to a burning skull with candles in its 'eyes', to a massive fire. Crospy screams, and is lit up like a bon fire, as he flees through the front, cabin, door. In the end of the prologue, everyone is in deep shock...and the movie begins.

Cropsy gets his revenge on a woman before he heads to camp...Tony Maylam's "The Burning", (1981). The movie was so shocking, (especially the beginning of the film), that it was a Video Nasty in the UK in the 1980's.
